What We Did: Hair

On Wednesday I had my final hair trial. Because the first hair and makeup trial had been so daunting, I wasn't really looking forward to the experience. I'd even started rethinking what I wanted again and again.

Luckily I listened to my incredibly supportive gals. One of my maids found a friend who knows curly hair and is a blast to be around. My diva of honor made sure that I relaxed (although I think I might have given her heart failure as we drove across town) and whipped up tuna sandwiches so that I wouldn't be hangry (hungry + angry).

Before we go any further this is where I have to ask cubes to stop reading. I'm sorry - it was suggested that the final style should be a surprise for you.

What ensued for the trial was the exact opposite of my first experience. It turned into a girls' and babies' night. We ordered delivery - yummy Thai - and watched two Dust Guppies scoot across the floor. A perfectly relaxed way to spend an evening. There was no disapproving glance and refusal to add colored highlights to my hair this time. Everyone was in total agreement.

In less time than I thought possible, I had my hair up in a simple elegant style that's totally me. Here's what we came up with. Ignore that I'm not wearing any makeup.

For those who suggested I wear it partially up with curls in the back: we went with the upswept side ponytail to show off my wedding dress. The lace neckline is amazing and shouldn't be hidden by my long hair. You'll see the dress soon I promise - it's my What We Did for the day of the wedding and will go live at the start of the cocktail reception (yep it's already written).

So what do you think of my hair? I totally love it.

Making Up the Bride: Hair Revisited Again.

When it comes to my hair the only things I really know is that I don't want it completely down, I don't want it tight across my forehead, and I do want wisps. Other than that though, I still can't decide although I am leaning towards one of the styles worn by Angelina Jolie.

In my every day life, I typically just casually pull my hair up into a ponytail or twist it into a loose bun and clip it. So maybe my wedding style should be more organic, less styled. Would something like these two styles be too casual?

I could wear the hat that Esther is making during the wedding and then I could add the hair clip in for the reception.

Or do I just keep it clean and simple, with a side-swept chignon?

Or a compromise?

Why am I thinking about my hair again? Well when I get back from Burning Man, it's time for another hair trial. I keep looking at the photos from my hair and makeup and keep doubting my original direction. I just hate how I look. I once thought that you didn't really need a hair or makeup trial. So wrong was I. Make sure you have one. Don't let the stylist tell you, well we'd change this on the day of your wedding and leave. Request that they make the modification right then at the trial. I wanted my hair to touch my shoulders. She could have loosened the ponytail to show me. I wanted my hair soft across my forehead. She could have loosened the tresses that were tight across my forehead. Maybe those two requests would have taken more than ten minutes. But without them, I couldn't imagine how my hair would look. So now I'm rethinking the look again.

Or do I just go with what I had originally envisioned for my hair that was not accomplished for my first hair trial. Here's what my hair should have looked like.

Curls touch her shoulder. Hair is loose across the forehead. Wisps of hair frame her face.

Maybe I'm just having such a hard time with this because my first hair trial wasn't what I expected. (I also hate that I look like I have two black eyes - so very glad I'm going with a makeup artist that I've already worked with. Proof from Vanessa that even with small eyes I don't need to look like a raccoon.)

Suggestions welcome.

Hair Today. Gone Tomorrow.

I've never given much thought to hair or makeup. But now it seems as if I can't stop thinking about it. Do I want my hair all up for the wedding or partially up? Do I want perfect cascading curls or messy curls?

Are you finding yourselves unsure about your bridal hair? To those already married, did you go with your first choice on the day of the wedding?

My latest look gets inspiration from Angelina Jolie. While I'm not necessarily a fan of her acting I do appreciate her fashion sense - especially her messy partly up updos.

Think a version of these styles would work on me?

Making Up the Bride: The Hair and Makeup Trial

Yesterday I had a hair and makeup trial. Overall both cubes and I liked the hairstyle. From the Front and side I think it's a little too severe. I was a little disappointed that my hair didn't really look like the images I gave for inspiration.

Two things for the hair that I'd change for the day of the wedding are that the bangs will be loose rather than pulled back across my forehead for a softer look and the ponytail with the curls will be lower so that the curls brush my shoulder. Luckily I'm going to have another trial.

Did you like the results of your hair and makeup trial?

Which way up?

I'd always thought that my stylist who I'd been going to for years would be doing my hair for my wedding. Unfortunately I can't afford her. What this means is that I've never really thought about what I wanted me hair to look like - I've always trusted her and was going to leave it to her.

So now I have a hair and makeup trial coming up and I need to be able to tell the makeup artist (MUA) what I want. Wedding blogs to the rescue. Here are a bunch of styles that might work for me. Do you have a favorite? Should I wear my hair (just past the middle of my back) up, partially up, or down?

Were you surprised to find out you can't afford your stylist's wedding prices? How did you chose a MUA?
